After serving in the US Navy as a Lieutenant jg during World War II, Herman, a native of McMinnville, Tennessee and Marjorie, a native of Madison, Indiana met and married while pursuing their Masters Degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky. After graduation, both served as Professors of Engineering at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee with Marjorie being the University’s first female engineering instructor. In 1951, the couple moved to Tullahoma where Herman began a 30 year career as a Mechanical Engineer at AEDC. Marjorie subsequently worked as an engineer at Arnold Center for ARO and the US Air Force. She also worked as a teacher and for Tennessee OSHA. Marjorie was active in various Civic causes and founded the Tullahoma Historic Society and Friends of Short Springs State Natural Area. She also served two terms as a Tullahoma Alderperson.
