Mia Hamm will serve as the guest speaker for the 20th anniversary celebration of Power of the Purse©.

After 17 years, two World Championships, two Olympic Gold Medals, and near unparalleled success as a marketing icon, Mia Hamm retired from professional soccer in 2004 as not only the best women’s soccer player in history but also as one of the most important and recognizable female figures in the history of sport. Hailed by ESPN as the greatest female athlete of the past 40 years, Mia was the youngest woman to ever appear in a match for the US Senior Squad at just 15 years old in 1987, and during her illustrious career playing for the national team shattered a litany of American records, most notably those for international goals (158) and assists (144).

Mia has continued to serve as an inspiration to young girls looking to rise to the pinnacle of the sporting world. She has maintained an active presence within the soccer community and has served as an outspoken advocate for Title IX and gender equality across sporting lines, all the while cementing her status as the face of not merely a sport but rather of an entire generation of female athletes through her Foundation. Mia is also part owner of the new Los Angeles Football Club.

All proceeds of The Power of the Purse© support the grantmaking potential of The Women’s Fund.  Since its inception in 1994, The Women’s Fund has made grants totaling more than $1.4 million to programs supporting women & girls in Middle Tennessee.

The Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund Luncheon is hosted by the Music City Center in the Davidson Room on Friday, May 11 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

IN HONOR
The 2018 Honorees include Judge Thomas Wiseman and Judge Richard Dinkins — two of the men who made it possible for all of our kids, no matter the color of their skin or the place of their birth, to attend public school by building the most important bridge our community has ever witnessed: the Desegregation of Public Schools.

IN MEMORY
Francis S. Guess served this community with vigor, commitment and pride for decades. He found his own bridge to equality, and then created the same opportunities for others throughout the country and here at home.

ABOUT THE FUND
No one who knew him can imagine what Nashville would have been like without Francis S. Guess. The child raised in public housing became the man whose fingerprints can be found on almost every major civic effort in our community.

Throughout his distinguished life, Francis S. Guess’ body of work has included the widest range of worthy causes from economic development to the preservation of musical heritage to investment in the human condition. He has served on the National Civil Rights Commission; has acted as Commissioner for the Tennessee departments of Labor and General Services under then Governor Lamar Alexander; and has provided volunteer support to more than 100 organizations.

As a community we honor his memory with gratitude for his many accomplishments. And to ensure that his efforts continue, The Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund has been created to help provide equal access to the American Dream, in perpetuity.
