Do You Know ALICE?
The Hidden Struggles of Low-Wage Families in Middle Tennessee
Why it Matters
In Davidson County, 41% of households cannot afford the basics —
housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and essential technology.
Many are working one, two, or even three jobs and still can’t get ahead. These neighbors
are known as ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.
When nearly half of our community is living paycheck to paycheck, the ripple effects
reach all of us — less spending power, increased demand on charities, fewer opportunities
for education and home ownership, and cycles of poverty that reduce health and life expectancy.
What We’ll Explore
Over breakfast, join fellow donor advised fund holders and community experts for a candid
conversation about the realities facing low-wage earners in our region — and how philanthropy
and the social sector can work together to meet urgent needs while building long-term stability.
You’ll hear stories behind the statistics, gain insights from United for ALICE research,
and leave with a clearer picture of how your giving can drive both immediate relief
and systemic change.
