The Metropolitan Human Relations Commission (MHRC) was established in Nashville in 1965, the year following the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Composed of fifteen representatives from various social, religious, ethnic, and racial groups, it was the first official human rights agency in Tennessee, and the organization that took on the responsibilities for upholding fair treatment and equal opportunity for all people in Nashville and Davidson County.
Nearly 60 years later, the MHRC continues this important work through core programs and special initiatives. A new and emerging initiative for 2023 is the establishment of the Nashville African American and Civil Rights History Museum to honor the roles that Nashville and the MHRC have played in advancing the rights of all Davidson County residents.
The Nashville African American and Civil Rights History Fund will help launch the effort to raise funds to cover initial and ongoing analysis focused on creating and maintaining a museum; developing, creating, maintaining, and installing exhibits for the museum; and covering overhead and operational costs related to the management of the museum, which may be handled directly or in partnership with other organizations committed to preserving the stories of our community’s commitment to civil rights of all.
