Philanthropic Visionary Jennifer Buffett to Speak at 12th Annual Power of the Purse Luncheon
The Women’s Fund of The Community Foundation Announces Event Chairs
NASHVILLE, TN – Philanthropic leader and co-chair of the NoVo Foundation Jennifer Buffett will address more than 600 women at the 12th Annual Power of the Purse Luncheon on April 23, 2010.
The Power of the Purse Luncheon benefits The Women's Fund of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, which celebrates women and contributes to the Fund's ability to make grants to nonprofit programs serving women and girls in need in Middle Tennessee. This year, the luncheon is co-chaired by The Women’s Fund board members Shannon Barton and Jamie Granbery.
The luncheon will be held April 23, 2010, at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville. Tickets are $200 per person or $2,000 for a table of 10. Reservations for the event can be made online at The Community Foundation’s Web sites www.cfmt.org or www.thewomensfund.com, or by calling 615-321-4939.
“Jennifer Buffet is one of America’s leading supporters of women’s philanthropy,” said Shannon Barton, co-chair of The Power of the Purse Luncheon. “Her work has created opportunities to improve the status of women and girls across the globe.”
NoVo (Latin for “to change, alter, invent”) is a philanthropic organization focused
primarily on the empowerment of women and girls. Jennifer, who co-chairs the Foundation with her husband, musician and composer Peter Buffett, is responsible for the strategic direction of NoVo, whose 2009 granting will exceed $40 million.
Jennifer’s work in philanthropy began in 1997 when her in-laws, Susan and Warren Buffett, placed Jennifer and Peter in charge of a charitable fund, which focuses on empowering women and girls.
Among NoVo’s initiatives, Jennifer has guided a partnership with the Nike Foundation on a $100 million granting partnership entitled “The Girl Effect,” which is focused on advancing the economic empowerment and well-being of adolescent girls in the developing world to break the cycle of poverty.
For 10 years, the Power of the Purse Luncheon and tribute book have celebrated and honored women, raising more than $1 million for The Women’s Fund. Since the inception of the Fund, hundreds of Middle Tennessee nonprofits have received grants to help women and girls in need.
“Shannon and I are honored to continue the tradition of creating a spectacular event inspiring women to be philanthropic leaders and benefiting women and girls in need in our community,” said Jamie Granbery, co-chair of the Power of The Purse Luncheon.
