The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee Seeks Scholarship Applicants

Nashville, TN, March 15, 2005 - The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a charitable organization that benefits nonprofits serving worthy causes, has announced its annual scholarship application process. The Foundation has added five new scholarships to its roster this year, bringing the total number to more than 40 scholarships available to help students further their education.

"The range of scholarships available through The Community Foundation has allowed us to help hundreds of students achieve their educational goals since 1993," said Ellen Lehman, President of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. "Each of our scholarships bears the goals and parameters of the generous people who established them. We are honored to connect their generosity with need and look forward to helping many others in the years ahead."

The new scholarships are the Colonel Richard M. Dawson Scholarship for students who are pursuing an education for a career in criminal justice; the Fine Arts and Music Scholarship for students studying art and music; the Dr. Mac Scholarship for students going into the dentistry profession; the Edna Martin Scholarship for students pursuing a career as a teacher; The Drue Smith/Society of Professional Journalists’ Scholarship for journalism students.

Applications for these funds are currently being accepted by The Community Foundation, which administers the scholarships. Applications must be submitted by April 1. Applicants will be notified of results in early May, 2005.

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee oversees more than 500 charitable funds, including more than 40 scholarship funds. In the past twelve years, The Foundation has distributed $225 million to community programs and institutions. Scholarships available through The Community Foundation:

  • Ayers Foundation Scholars Program benefits graduating seniors who are residents of Decatur County, Tennessee. Applicants should contact their guidance counselors for details.
  • Belmont University Commercial Music Scholarship benefits students accepted at/or attending Belmont University, majoring in commercial music.
  • George Oliver Benton Memorial Scholarship for legislative interns.
  • JoAhn Brown-Nash Memorial Scholarship, for female students at Fisk University.
  • William and Clara Bryan Scholarships benefit residents of Giles County.
  • Leigh Carter Scholarship for chiropractic students.
  • Cheatham County Scholarships support residents of Cheatham County.
  • Colonel Richard M. Dawson Scholarship supports students pursuing a career in criminal justice.
  • Jimmy Edwards Scholarship benefits students of Donelson High, or any descendants of Donelson High alumni.
  • Fine Arts and Music Scholarship supports students pursuing a career in visual arts and music.
  • The Genesco Scholarship benefits Genesco Inc. employees and their children.
  • Pauline LaFon Gore Scholarship benefits residents of Smith County.
  • Maude Keisling/Cumberland County Extension Homemakers Scholarship benefits residents of Cumberland County, who wish to pursue careers working with families and/or children.
  • Senator Carl O. Koella, Jr. Memorial Scholarship benefits public or private legislative interns, with special consideration for residents of Blount County and Sevier County.
  • Michael B. Kruse Scholarship to support students with a goal of becoming a CPA.
  • Heloise Werthan Kuhn Scholarship benefits pregnant or parenting teens participating in the programs of United Neighborhood Health Services.
  • The Dr. Mac Scholarship supports aspiring dentistry students.
  • The Edna Martin Scholarship supports students in teaching and education.
  • John E. Mayfield ABLE Scholarship, for participants of the Athletes Build Life Experiences program.
  • John Mayfield Scholarship for Cheatham County Central High School benefits students of Cheatham County Central High School.
  • John Mayfield Scholarship for Harpeth High School benefits students of Harpeth High School of Cheatham County.
  • John Mayfield Scholarship for Pleasant View Christian School benefits students of Pleasant View Christian School of Cheatham County.
  • John Mayfield Scholarship for Sycamore High School benefits students of Sycamore High School of Cheatham County.
  • Archie Hartwell Nash Memorial Scholarship provides support for sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate students of Middle Tennessee State University, who are working their way through college.
  • Jerry Newson Scholarship benefits residents of Davidson County who are majoring in the social sciences.
  • Eloise Pitts O’More Scholarship for interior design students at O’More College of Design.
  • The Buster Poole Memorial Scholarship supports students in Meridian Mississippi.
  • Barbara Hagan Richards Scholarship for graduates of any Giles County high school.
  • James Edwards “Bill” Richards Scholarship for students currently enrolled in college, and/or alumni of East High School in Nashville.
  • Wilbur C. Sensing, Jr. Scholarship was created to assist the children of all Enco Materials, Inc. employees wishing to pursue post-secondary education.
  • The Drue Smith/Society of Professional Journalists’ Scholarship supports students going into the print or broadcast news fields.
  • Richie Stevenson Jr. Scholarship was created to benefit graduates of Benton Hall School wishing to attend technical/vocational school, community college, junior college or four-year college or university.
  • Student Education Loan Program provides emergency financial support to young men or women whose parents have discontinued financial support for their education because the students are gay or lesbian.
  • Tennessee Trucking Association Scholarship
  • The Emmett Turner Scholarship for students at TSU studying criminal justice.
  • Turner Family Scholarships benefit full-time employees of Dollar General. Deadlines to apply are April 1, July 1, and November 1. Contact the Employee Resource Center for applications.
  • The Woman’s Club of Nashville Scholarship for women residing in Davidson County.
  • John W. Work III Memorial Foundation Scholarship, for students pursuing a degree in music.
