The Community Foundation Names New Board Officers

-- Four Civic and Business Leaders Also Join Board --

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a charitable organization that benefits non-profits serving those in need in 40 Middle Tennessee counties, has named four community leaders to officer positions on its 2004 Board of Directors; and added four prominent individuals to the board, according to Foundation President Ellen Lehman.

The new officers are:

  • Dr. John E. Maupin, Chairman
  • Nelson Andrews, Vice Chairman
  • Nicky Weaver, Secretary
  • Charlie Cook, Treasurer

"We are gratified that these accomplished, well-respected individuals have taken leadership positions on The Community Foundation Board of Directors, and are pleased to welcome our distinguished new members," said Lehman. "Their experience and outstanding commitment to the greater Middle Tennessee community will ensure that The Community Foundation continues to connect generosity with need in order to advance its commitment to improve the lives of all those living in Middle Tennessee."

Dr. John E. Maupin currently is President of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and is responsible for its administration, operations and development. Previously, he was Executive Vice President for Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, and served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Maupin received his D.D.S. from Meharry Medical College, and his M.B.A. from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD.

Nelson Andrews currently is President of Andrews Properties, Inc., Nashville, and Chairman of the Brookside Management Group, Inc., Nashville. He was a founder and former President of the following organizations: Nashville Better Business Bureau, Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University, Tennessee Health Care Network and Leadership Nashville. Andrews is a graduate of Vanderbilt University.

Nicky Weaver has served on The Community Foundation board since 2000. Previously, she was a board member of the Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Nashville Institute for the Arts, and Alive Hospice, Nashville. Weaver attended the University of Michigan, where she majored in Fine Arts and Advertising Design.

Charlie Cook was President and CEO of Union Planters Bank of Middle Tennessee, Nashville; and President, Chairman and CEO of Third National Bank, Nashville. Currently, he is overseeing the formation of Nashville Bank & Trust. Cook also was Director of Finance for Nashville-Davidson County Metropolitan Government. He is a graduate of Yale University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.

The Community Foundation's Board of Directors also named four new members: Dr. Tommy Frist, Jr., former Chairman and CEO of Hospital Corporation of America, Nashville; Francis Guess, Executive Vice President of The Danner Company, Nashville; Bill King, Founder and Chairman of Board Member, Inc., Brentwood, TN, and Betsy Walkup, Chairwoman of the Nashville Metropolitan Employee Benefit Board.
