Clarksville, TN– The sixth annual Cumberland Ball, The Community Foundation of Cheatham County’s gala event, was held May 15th at the Clarksville Country Club. Two hundred people from the Cheatham County area attended, raising more than $30,000 for scholarships.

The money raised from the event benefits the Cheatham County Scholarship Fund, which was established in 1998.

The event, themed “Enchanted Evening in Paradise,” was chaired by Beth and Mike Stuart of Ashland City. The only black tie event in Cheatham County, The Cumberland Ball includes dinner, dancing and a silent auction.

“There is a lot of buzz surrounding our gala event,” said Beth Stuart. “It has evolved into not only a fabulous social event, but also an avenue for party goers to give money to a great cause. Through The Community Foundation of Cheatham County, we have been able to influence the lives of others who are furthering their education, therefore furthering the quality of life for the people of Cheatham County.”

The Cheatham County Scholarship Fund benefits students who are residents of the county and exhibit scholastic merit, maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA as well as a financial need for continuing education. Since 1999, 22 scholarships have been awarded through the fund. The fund has grown to more than $144,000. Scholarships are normally awarded in late spring to qualifying candidates.

“We want to make these scholarships a reality for anyone who has a financial need, not only “A” students,” said John Mayfield, board chair for the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. “We do not want to ignore those students who may not have a perfect GPA, but have the desire to attend college.”

The Community Foundation of Cheatham County, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, aims to facilitate charitable giving in Cheatham County. As an affiliate, the Community Foundation of Cheatham County operates with its own board of directors and is a charitable community endowment whose purpose is to increase the philanthropic base for Cheatham County, focusing especially on scholarships and unmet charitable needs of the county’s citizens.

The Cheatham County Scholarship fund is one of 450 charitable funds within the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. In the past twelve years, The Foundation has distributed $195 million to community programs and institutions. Currently, The Foundation manages endowment, unrestricted and memorial funds totaling $327 million. It is located at 3833 Cleghorn Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee 37215.
