Nashville, TN, May 30, 2004 – The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, a charitable organization that benefits non-profits serving those in need in 40 Middle Tennessee counties, has awarded 35 scholarships, valued at $106,230, to 89 individuals who are pursuing higher education in accredited schools in the United States.
Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $2,500 and assist students with tuition and other school-related expenses. Each year the Community Foundation scholarship committee, composed of 12 individuals from various professional backgrounds, reviews applications on behalf of donors who entrust the foundation with administering their annual awards. The first week in April of this year, the committee began reviewing 371 applications for the 35 scholarships.
“The 2004 scholarship winners represent some of the best and brightest students in our area,” said Ellen Lehman, president of The Community Foundation. “They are dedicated to pursuing educational excellence and we are proud to help them reach their goals.”
Every year the scholarship committee must take into account the individual criteria of each fund donor, which often include stipulations that an applicant reside in a certain geographic location or apply to a specific school. The committee also carefully considers applicants’ academic records, test scores, extracurricular activities, work experience, community involvement and personal recommendations.
Since its inception in 1991, The Community Foundation Scholarship Program applicant pool has grown from 17 to as many as 478.
“The Community Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for people to expand their minds and chase their dreams,’ said Lehman. “We are honored each year to be the link that joins these generous scholarship donors with talented and deserving recipients.”
The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee oversees more than 450 charitable funds. In the past twelve years, The Foundation has distributed $195 million to community programs and institutions. Currently, The Foundation manages endowment, unrestricted and memorial funds totaling $327 million. It is located at 3833 Cleghorn Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee 37215.
